Ground broken for city’s aquatics center
During a warm afternoon that was fit for swimming, Elk Grove city officials on May 4 broke ground on their long-awaited aquatics center at Civics Center Drive, just south of Elk Grove Boulevard.While holding shovels with glistening blades, local dignitaries and several others ceremoniously unearthed the first scoops of dirt from the site, which will include a 50-meter pool, a six-lane fitness and instructional pool, and a recreational pool.Crowded around that scene were community members, who were eager to observe a bit of local history in the making.The gathering marked the beginning of the initial phase of what will become the city’s largest community facility: the civic center.Additionally included in that first phase will be a pedestrian-friendly public space known as The Commons. It will also serve as a transitional space for other amenities coming to the civic center, including the community center/senior center/veterans memorial hall building, which is expected to open in 2019.With a target opening date of May 28, 2018, the aquatic center project will move forward, as crews will work toward readying the place for its grand opening.
