Job Title: Aquatic Coordinator

Reports to: Aquatics DirectorRevision Date: June 25, 2021

POSITION SUMMARY:

Assists in developing, organizing, and implementing high quality aquatic programming. Demonstrates direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for aquatics staff in accordance with applicable policies and procedures. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes staff and member safety and engagement.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Staffing
    1. Leads by example in the delivery of high-quality aquatics programs, instructions, and staff trainings/in-services.
    2. Assists in reviewing and evaluating staff performance.
    3. Keeps staff on task, ensure they are preforming in accordance with established safety rules, regulations and policies, and address concerns with staff as they arise.
    4. Maintains an open line of communication with Aquatic Director and other association & department staff throughout entire tenure of the job.
    5. Acts as department management in the absence of Aquatic Director.
    6. Assists in solving any staffing issues that may arise.
    7. Serves as a trainer for newly hired staff through administering new hire orientations including shadowing/co-teaching shifts.
  • Paperwork
    1. Manages aquatic staff timesheets and payroll information.
    2. Maintains chemistry logs, pool counts, class records, and various staff training records.
    3. Maintains the pool schedule & staff schedule as needed.
    4. Assists with data entry and editing of programs in our registration system.
    5. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code.
    6. Documents and notifies Director of incidents/injuries, member questions/concerns, damaged equipment, supply needs, etc.
    7. Responsible for assuring the outlined procedures for opening/closing the pool area are fully completed.
  • Departmental
    1. Supervises aquatic program activities to meet objectives. Ensures program quality and monitors staff performance and member service.
    2. Develops relationships with members and obtains regular feedback on programs.
    3. Recommend program enhancements to ensure that members needs are being met.
    4. Performs all department staff competencies exceptionally including those of Lifeguards, Swim Instructors, CPR/Lifeguard trainer, and Water Fitness Instructor.
    5. Maintains certifications listed under Certificates.
    6. Must be flexible with working hours – opening, closing and weekend shifts, as necessary.
    7. Receives and carries out instructions.
    8. Wears appropriate staff attire while on duty including nametag.
    9. Responds to correspondence (phone, email, or in-person) in a timely and professional manner.
    10. Performs other duties as assigned by Aquatic Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and/or experience

  • Minimum of two-years lifeguard experience
  • Minimum of one year of swim instructor experience
  • One to two-years of aquatic related leadership experience as a Head Guard, Aquatic Coordinator, Supervisor or Manager is preferred
  • Must be at least 21 years of age

Certifications – must be current and maintained

  • American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard – YMCA, Ellis, Star Guard is allowed, but staff is willing to recertify as ARC Lifeguard within 30 days of employment
  • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer with First Aid (2 years’ experience)
  • Lifeguard Instructor – is willing to acquire this certification if not already
  • YSLv6 – is willing to acquire this certification if not already
  • Administering Emergency Oxygen – recommended (required if YSLv6)
  • CPO, Certified Pool Operator or AFO, Aquatic Facility Operator – is willing to acquire this certification if not already

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT & Physical Demands:

  • Ability to demonstrate swimming skills and ability to project voice to be heard in the pool area.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50lbs. as required, may require more in the event of a water rescue.
  • Ability to perform moderate to intense physical activity that may include sitting and/or standing for extended periods, walking, crouching, kneeling, bending, twisting and reaching.
  • Must be able to remain alert with no lapses of consciousness in a warm environment with air temperatures of 80 degrees or higher.
  • Ability to recognize distress signals.
