Recreation & Wellbeing (Rec Well) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking a dynamic, goal-oriented individual who is looking to build their knowledge of Aquatics within higher education. The Aquatics Professional Intern will be responsible for the hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluation of aquatic student-staff and promoting participant safety and satisfaction. This position will be responsible for assisting the Coordinator of Aquatics in developing lifeguarding in-service and training sessions as well as supporting aquatic rentals and Rec Well events by planning setup and tear down of equipment. Hours will primarily be Monday to Friday, up to 30 hours per week, with some nights and weekends.

Tasks:

  • Develop and implement lifeguard in-service and training sessions and assist with maintaining lifeguard certifications.
  • Assist with hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating aquatic student-staff.
  • Lead lifeguarding in-services and trainings using American Red Cross skills and evaluate lifeguarding staff to standards of their certifications.
  • Perform regular facility and equipment inspections.
  • Enforce Rec Well policies and procedures to promote participant safety and satisfaction.
  • Assist in the scheduling of all aquatic facilities, including internal programming and rentals.
  • Support aquatic rentals and Rec Well events with planning, setup, and tear down.

Job qualifications:

  • Experience planning and leading American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor certification or ability to attain it within the first 30 days of start date.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR, AED certification or ability to attain it within the first 30 days of start date.
  • Demonstrate communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to think creatively and critically to identify and solve problems.
  • Customer service experience.

Education:

  • Required:
    • High School Diploma or higher in related field
  • Preferred:
    • Achieve or advancing towards Bachelor’s Degree or higher in related field
    • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75

Additional Information:

  • Academic year internships are limited-time employments lasting 9 months or 1,043 total hours
  • Internship dates are approximate and will run mid-August through May
  • Interns will be compensated at a rate of $21.50/hour for an average of 30 hours/week
  • Allotted time off for university breaks (approximately four weeks unpaid)
  • Position requires a criminal background investigation and valid driver’s license
  • Housing, benefits, and health insurance not included

Compensation:

  • $21.50/hour
  • Ability to work a maximum of 1,040 total hours (30 hours/week average)
