Full Time Assistant Aquatics Director

Job Description

The Assistant Aquatics Director is responsible for the execution of swim lessons, life guarding, and the delivery of safety classes as needed.  This position includes supervision and management of part time aquatics staff, and building and managing relationships with staff and members.  Responsibilities include assisting with the management of the overall operations of the indoor and outdoor facilities.  The position also ensures safety standards are met and staff is educated relative to these standards.  The Assistant Aquatics Director works in both the Franklin and Foxboro branches.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensures national quality standards are met or exceeded in all program areas under the direction of the Aquatics Director
  • Assists in directly supervising the lifeguards and lifeguard trainer staff
  • Oversees pool schedules
  • Works cooperatively with Association Branch staff regarding teen and community aquatics programs
  • Attends appropriate meeting and trainings
  • Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates staff in a consistent and timely manner
  • Keeps staff schedule complete and current
  • Interviews and hires new staff, under the supervision of the Aquatics Director
  • Observes swim instructors to assure program quality on a regular schedule
  • Communicates with instructors and aquatics team staff in a caring and professional manner
  • Checks time sheets and verifies hours
  • Maintains current working knowledge of programs.
  • Instructs lessons and lifeguards, as needed
  • Communicates with member/parents of concerns, changes, credits or transfers, in a professional manner.
  • Partners with Aquatics Director to develop new programs to ensure that programs are reflecting the needs of the community.
  • Monitors phone calls and e-mails, and returns messages in a timely manner
  • Keeps current with all of the YMCA’s safety policies and procedures
  • Follows and enforces all relevant Association and Branch policies
  • Exemplifies the YMCA character development principles at all times
  • All YMCA positions include responsibilities related to cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces, equipment, materials


  • Bachelor’s Degree (BA) from a four-year college or university required
  • Prior Aquatics management experience is desired, preferably in a YMCA environment
  • Prior lifeguard and/or swim instructor experience, preferred
  • Strong relationship building skills and supervisory skills are essential
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Some experience with budget management
  • Ability to solve problems in a fast paced environment
  • Maintain current certification in the following:
    • YMCA Lifeguard Certification
    • YMCA Swim Instructor Certification
    • YMCA Swim Trainer Certification
    • First Aid and CPR Certificate
