This is a part-time seasonal position and is exempt from Veterans Preference.

Under the close supervision of the Swim Lesson Coordinator, performs varied routine duties associated with implementing, coordinating, and supervising the aquatic swim lesson program. Supervision is exercised over swim instructors. May be required to work as needed as a Pool Manager. Work requires flexible hours (mornings and evenings).  Performs other work as required.

Examples of Duties
  • Monitors and supervises swim lesson usage by patrons.
  • Opens and secures facility for swim lessons.
  • Maintains class attendance.
  • Performs general housekeeping practices in the aquatic facility.
  • Ensures the safety of class participants.
  • Performs duties as assigned by coordinator when necessary.
  • Teaches swim lessons when needed.
  • Physically adapts swimming pool for daily usage by swim lesson patrons.
  • Enforce rules and regulation of proper facility use.
  • Answers phone, handles money and record keeping for class registration
  • May lead work activities of designated personnel.
  • May perform duties of Pool Manager when necessary.
  • Completes chemical checks before and after swimming lessons.
  • Coaches swim team, organize and run swim meets, practices, text or call parents with cancelations and make up practices.
Typical Qualifications
  • 6 weeks (one summer season) experience as a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI);
  • Experience teaching at all skill levels preferred.
  • Must hold a current certificate in American Red Cross Lifeguard certification and Water Safety Instructor (WSI).
Supplemental Information
  • Knowledge how to teach all swimming levels and swim team.
  • Ability to communicate with other WSI to assist them in teaching the Red Cross curriculum and guidelines for swim lessons.
  • Ability to determine the appropriate skill level for participants.
  • Ability to responsibly oversee the use of the swimming pool for swim lessons.
  • Ability to investigate and resolve citizen complaints and inquiries.
  • Knowledge to complete all opening and closing paperwork and duties
  • Ability to communicate with the public and handle issues and complaints.


  • Ability to successfully demonstrate all swimming strokes.
  • Ability to understand and communicate with children.
  • Ability to lift children in the swim lesson program.
  • Ability to walk, stand, reach, kneel and lift throughout the working day and participate in activities that require physical dexterity.
  • Ability to see clearly.
  • Ability to hear.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to work in cold, heat, wetness, and around noise, fumes and odors.
