The City of Ames Parks and Recreation Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Lifeguard. Candidates interested in this opportunity can expect to work a varying schedule May 2021 through September 2021 and may be extended up on mutual agreement.
Lifeguards are directly accountable to both Shift Leaders and the Aquatics and Activities Manager and adjunctly accountable to the Recreation Superintendent and the Director of Parks & Recreation.

Examples of Essential Job Functions
Prevents injuries by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations and behaviors; consistently enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules, and regulations and educate patrons about them; recognize and respond quickly and effectively to all emergencies; administer first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or use an AED in an emergency; inform other lifeguards, facility staff and management when more help or equipment is needed; inspect the facility on a daily schedule and report any unsafe conditions or equipment to the shift leader; complete and submit required records and reports; perform routine cleaning and maintenance as prescribed; participate in regular in-service training sessions; exercise regularly to maintain fitness level (swimming skills, strength and endurance); and complete additional duties as assigned by Shift Leaders or the Aquatics Manager.

Education and Experience: Must be at least 15 years of age. Lifeguarding experience is recommended.
Licenses and Certifications: Current American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid and AED training is required.
Candidates not possessing these certifications may still apply; the City will provide a Lifeguard certification course at the reduced rate of $45. This fee will directly cover the employee’s certificate fee due to the Red Cross plus course materials

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Necessary to Perform Essential Functions: Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
Skill in leadership, public relations, and decision-making.
Ability to understand facility characteristics, rules, policies, and procedures; ability to understand, appreciate and embody the City of Ames Core Values; ability to assist in maintaining an exceptional level of safety and sanitation of the pool facility; ability to complete all modules of Lifeguard Orientation; ability to maintain a professional appearance (see Lifeguard Dress Code) and demeanor at all times.

• Working hours are generally between 11:00 am – 9:00 pm
The selection process consists of an evaluation of education and experience, an interview, and completion of a criminal background check, which includes a sex offender registry check. All candidates will be notified by email of their application status.
