CITY OF BRIGHTON 

AQUA INSTRUCTOR 

 

DEFINITION:

Conducts fitness classes following guidelines established by the Fitness Coordinator, in accordance with national certification organizations to insure a safe, effective and fun workout.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives direction from the Fitness Coordinator.  Exercises supervision over fitness class participants and volunteers.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT / ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Evaluate and set class environment.  Remove any obstructions from workout area.        Set up music and adjust it to the appropriate volume.
  • Conduct the pre-class student screening.        Make sure participants medical conditions have been addressed.  Explain pulse-check, target heart rate, and rate of perceived exertion.
  • Instruct the participants through a 55 minute exercise program using the following guidelines:
    1. Demonstrate safe and effective class sequences.
    2. Utilize modification techniques for all fitness levels.
    3. Educate participants using auditory and visual techniques.
    4. Execute smooth sequencing and transitions throughout the entire class.
    5. Use verbal and visual anticipatory cuing for movement transitions.
    6. Utilize the “bell curve” program design.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Fitness safety standards and guidelines.
  • Choreography design based on a 32 count rotation.
  • Age respective class / exercise design.
  • Skill modifications for various fitness levels.
  • Hazards inherent to exercise and safety practices to minimize exposure.
  • Emergency protocol.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Hold a Aqua Instructor Certification from an accredited agency

Certification in CPR and First Aid.

Must pass a criminal background check.

ABILITY TO:

  • Understand community needs in fitness / wellness and evaluate activities according to those needs.
  • Monitor program compliance with related law / standards, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Effectively use good customer service skills.        Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with program participants, other city employees and officials, community groups, the public and media representatives.
  • Provide own substitute instructor, from the fitness staff roster, to in instruct your assigned class.
  • Substitute for other fitness instructors when needed.
  • Attend mandatory meetings and training sessions as outlined by the Fitness Coordinator.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge in the fitness field (attend workshops, read fitness publications, visit other fitness facility classes).
  • Assist in training and advising of other instructors.
  • Maintain a personal fitness level that will support your Fitness Instruction journey.

 

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to perform moderate physical work.        To lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally more.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, ride, climb, bend, kneel, twist, and perform similar body movements.
  • Possesses hand / eye / foot coordination adequate to teach a fitness class.
  • Ability to talk and hear in person.
  • Ability to see and read instructions, manuals, recreation and athletic programs in progress.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:

A combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

  • Must have participated in the specific fitness class that will be instructed, for at least 1 year.
  • Must have a minimum of 1 month of Fitness Instruction experience.

Training:

  • Must be adequately trained to teach a safe, effect and fun.
  • Must attend various fitness workshops to support current fitness standards.
