Work is performed under the general supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor I.

Essential Functions

  • Observes swimmers from guard stand or poolside and cautions swimmers of rule violations to enforce pool safety rules.
  • Conducts appropriate emergency and rescue techniques including cardiopulmonary resuscitation for distressed or drowning swimmers.
  • Administers first aid to pool patrons for injuries such as cuts, abrasions, sprains, and contusions to provide basic medical assistance as needed.
  • Reports injuries, accidents, and assistance rendered to patrons to the pool manager and documents each occurrence to maintain proper files on such occurrences.
  • Cleans pool, pool area, and restrooms to maintain a clean and sanitary facility.
  • Inspects pool equipment such as ladders, diving boards, and guard stands.
  • Monitors and documents water quality to ensure that the pool water maintains a proper chemical balance.
  • May perform head lifeguard or cashier duties to assist the pool manager in pool operation duties.
  • Instructs participants enrolled in the Learn to Swim program.
  • Plans lessons, evaluates individual participant progress, and provides corrective feedback.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records and reports.
  • Enforces rules.
  • Responds to emergency situations in an effective manner.
  • Communicates with the general public regarding lessons.
  • Recruits, trains and assigns class aides and assistants. Insures there is a lifeguard on duty.
  • Available for all special events, swim meets, and swimming classes or other functions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification and Water Safety Instructor certification or the ability to obtain such by the end date of seasonal employee orientation.
  • If required certifications are not obtained by the end date of seasonal employee orientation candidates must attend next available certification course offered by the City of Dallas before reporting to assigned work location.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of lifesaving and first aid techniques.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures and response.
  • Knowledge of pool chemical treatment requirements.
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid Certifications required.
  • Must possess one of the following current lifeguard certifications; American Red Cross  Lifeguard Certification, Y.M.C.A.’s Lifeguard or equivalent certification; may require American Red Cross or YMCA or equivalent water safety instructor certification
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to swim.
  • Ability to teach swimming lessons and safety procedures to others as required under the Learn to Swim program.
  • Ability to keep records pertaining to teaching of swimming lessons and enforce water safety rules.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all levels of management, city officials, vendors, other government agencies, other employees and the general public.
