Full Time Senior Aquatics Specialist – Increased Starting Pay!

Work in this class involves working with the Aquatics Manager in developing and implementing a comprehensive water safety and instruction program.  Work in this class includes training, teaching, certifications, building and pool facility management and lifeguarding.  Work may include additional duties such as serving as the on-site Certified Pool Operator, teaching swim lessons, leading specialized classes and programs and other duties related to aquatics functions.   There is more than one position in this class so duties may vary according to area of assignment.  Work is performed under the general supervision of the Aquatics Manager and oversight is exercised over part-time lifeguards and Aquatics Specialists.

Examples of Duties

  • Develops and implements health, life, and safety programs to include lifeguard certification, lifeguard recertification, lifeguard in-service training, CPR, AED and first aid certification and recertification.
  • Teaches periodic classes to train new lifeguards and recertify existing lifeguards through a certifying agency such as American Red Cross.
  • Teaches periodic in-service training for lifeguards.
  • Teaches classes in first aid AED and CPR.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive instruction program including all levels of swim instruction, stroke improvement classes, specialty classes, and therapeutic programs.
  • Develops swim class standards and teaches classes in accordance with established standards.
  • Assumes overall responsibility for the pool facility operations on assigned shift.
  • On a rotating basis, assumes responsibility for building management, which may include opening and closing the Morrisville Aquatics and Fitness Center (MAFC).
  • Provides customer service by answering questions and responding to patron complaints.
  • Maintains a rotation as a lifeguard on a regular basis and performs the duties required of lifeguards.
  • Oversees the pool area and all aquatics patrons.
  • Provides oversight and direction to part-time lifeguards and Aquatics Specialists on a regular basis and provides guidance and oversight to front desk staff and others when serving as MAFC facility supervisor on assigned shift.
  • Participates in aquatics operations and maintenance operations including daily monitoring of pool equipment and chemicals.
  • Maintain cleanliness of pool area, pump rooms, chemical storage rooms and locker room areas.
  • Documents all training and certifications for staff.

Typical Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of aquatics facility and program operations; thorough knowledge of aquatic facility maintenance; thorough knowledge of aquatics programming; ability to perform duties as a lifeguard; ability to perform duties as a Certified Pool Operator; ability to operate and maintain order in a public facility; ability to lead facility operations on a rotating basis; Ability to respond to problems in facility operations and maintenance; ability to communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, participants, community organizations and the general public.

Supplemental Information

Any combination of education and training equivalent to graduation from high school with considerable experience in lifeguarding, swim instruction and supervision.    Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in recreation management, aquatics, or related field, may be substituted for some experience in lifeguarding.
