Job Description

At JCC Chicago, lifeguards and swim instructors play a vital role in the physical and learning development of our students. Working at JCC means working in an active, fast paced and friendly environment. Our emphasis is always on fun, safety and meeting the next challenge for students and instructors alike.

We are now hiring Swim Instructors for two dynamic programs:

  • The JCC Swim Lessons is an aquatics education program organized around swimming foundations and designed with an emphasis on safety. From the age of three months, children (and adults) can start at any time and learn and progress at their own pace. Students are taught the American Red Cross swim method, which focuses on correct body positioning and proper alignment from the early stages of lessons. Training in the American Red Cross Swim Instruction principles will be provided.


  • JCC Chicago’s All-In Swim (AIS) Program was designed to teach water safety and swim skills for those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in a comfortable, supportive environment. Our certified instructors use the proven SwimRight® method as the basis for a unique curriculum that focuses on valuable life-saving techniques, recreational swim therapy, and increased independence and self-esteem. If you have not had this specific experience previously, but have the passion, WE WILL TRAIN YOU!

Essential Job Functions:

  • Ability to lift/move children up to 40 lbs.
  • Physical stamina and agility required to be mobile for long periods throughout the day (up to 4 hours/day in pool).
  • Must also be able to hold and/or support children in chest deep water.
  • Ability to lift children and adults out of the pool in an emergency.
  • Ability to move from sitting (chair and floor) to standing position easily and quickly.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and be able to run and actively engage physically with children in and out of the swimming pool.
  • Ability to react with physical and mental alertness in emergency situations (jump into the pool to rescue anyone that need assistance; small child(ren) to adults weighing more than 200 pounds using proper rescue equipment).
  • Must be able to rotate head side to side to scan the pool while lifeguarding and be physically and mentally alert in emergency situations including rotating head to side to side.
  • Ability to use of hands and arms for grasping, pulling, pushing and sliding aquatic chairs, pool stairs and PVC benches both in and out of the water.
  • Ability to demonstrate, motivate and communicate a swim skill in the water and swim 50 yrd.
  • Ability to use a loud voice during swim lessons and supervise children and adults around and in the pool by sight and sound.
  • Ability to set up and take down the pool each day (includes putting in/ removing stairs into the pool, placing lane lines in the pool by bending down and wrenching them in).

Various morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend shifts available



Knowledge of and experience working with children; experience teaching those with special abilities helpful but not required; willingness to participate in the full swim instruction training program and/or All-In Swim training program.  Previous experience teaching children in a “Learn to Swim” program preferred but WE WILL TRAIN YOU!
