Lifeguards MIA at Coney Island beach
Lifeguards MIA at Coney Island beach.
Tuesday, June 19, 2018
It’s beach season, but a large swath of popular Coney Island beach is being neglected with no lifeguards on site. Several bays of the Southern Brooklyn oasis nearby W. 27th Street and a public bathroom have been without lifeguards on duty for several summers, locals say. Yet there’s plenty of on-duty Parks Department workers, whose job it is appears to be to keep watch on beach-goers and flag them back to the shore if they attempt to swim at their own risk.
The section of the beach with no lifeguards are not closed and beach-goers have no indication that a lifeguard is not on-duty until they get down to the shoreline and see an empty lifeguard lookout tower. Seems pretty ridiculous that there’s no lifeguards manning the area, yet there’s a plethora of Parks Department staffers on foot and ATV patrol to pester swimmer
