Saturday, February 3rd 2018, 10:47 pm PSTBy HNN StaffC   WAILEA, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) -According to the Maui Fire Department, there have been 10 ocean-related deaths in the first 34 days of 2018. That number includes the latest apparent drowning that killed an Alaskan visitor Saturday. MFD officials say the 80-year-old man was visiting from the Alaskan town of Homer when he went snorkeling at Ulua Beach Saturday morning. He went to the beach with a family member but decided to snorkel alone. That’s when bystanders noticed the man floating face down in the water roughly 50 feet from the shoreline.Bystanders brought him to shore where life-saving efforts were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Unlike some previous deaths in Maui waters, officials say the man was wearing a traditional two-piece snorkel mask.   Read more…
