Safety questions surface for full-faced snorkel masks | News, Sports, Jobs – Maui News

Tristen Grey, 12, of Saskatchewan, Canada, is jostled by a wave while entering the water at Kamaole III Beach Park. He is snorkeling with a full-face mask. He said he was having no problems with it. Some are questioning the safety of the mask’s design, saying it’s prone to leaking and fogging up and can be difficult to take off. Two California men died recently while snorkeling in the ocean off Kihei, and both were using the new type of masks. More recent deaths, however, have involved snorkelers using traditional two-piece snorkel-and-mask equipment. —

The increasing popularity of new full-faced snorkeling masks has ignited some concern after two California men died earlier this month while using them in the ocean off Kihei.The official cause of death for both men remained unknown pending autopsy results, Maui County Fire Department officials said. But the department and others in the state are collecting data on incidents involving the new mask design.The full-face snorkel mask covers the eyes, nose and mouth and tucks under a person’s chin. An air tube piece is attached to the top of the mask and goes over the forehead to the back of a snorkeler’s head.  Read more…
