Description: The purpose of a Swim Instructor is to facilitate and teach group and/or private swim lessons at Gypsum Recreation Center, Eagle Pool and Ice Rink and Gypsum Creek Pool as assigned and per American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim curriculum. Swim Instructors teach people of different abilities and needs—infants and preschoolers, children and youth, people with disabilities, adult beginners, and older adults—how to swim and how to be safe in, on and around the water.Essential functions— Primary responsibilities include: Planning lessons and activities for American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim Parent and Child Aquatics group lessonsPlanning lessons and activities for American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim Preschool Aquatics Levels 1-3 group lessonsPlanning lessons and activities for American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim Level 1-4 group lessonsScheduling and Planning lessons and activities for American Red Cross Private and Semi-Private lessonsCommunicating to parents before or after each lesson what their child did during the lesson, what information is to be covered at the next lesson and what their child need to improve on.Managing groups of children with a ration of 1:4 or 1:6 of instructor to childrenMaintaining a safe and welcoming learning environment for all age groupsKnowledge of the facility Emergency Action Plan and understanding the role of a swim instructor in an emergencyIntegrating American Red Cross Safety Topics into each lessonAdapting and offering alternatives to lesson objectives for participants with special needs, with inclusion as the emphasis.Secondary responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Completing report cards for each participant and handed out at the last lessonHaving swim equipment staged before lessons begin and put away in storage after each lesson.Handing out Parent Evaluations at the end of each sessionCommunicating to parents when the next session of swim lessons will be available and can make a recommendation of what level the participant should sign up for next.Competency—Candidates must be able to communicate with patrons in English, bilingual in Spanish preferred. Candidates must be knowledgeable of swim strokes including Front Crawl, Elementary Backstroke, Breaststroke, Back Crawl, Butterfly, Sidestroke as well as open turns, flip turns, head first entries. Candidates must be knowledgeable of teaching above techniques and be knowledgeable of safety precautions for swimmers. Candidates must be up to date on the latest edition of American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim curriculum.Work environment—indoors year-round including warm, moderately humid conditions and moderately noisy at Gypsum Recreation Center, outdoors in the summer at Gypsum Creek Pool and Eagle Pool and Ice Rink including warm to colder weather, rain, sun exposure, and moderately noisy. All WECMRD facilities are a Drug and Alcohol Free workplace.Physical demands—Candidates must be capable of swimming, sitting, walking, running, bending over, kneeling, lifting items up to 50lbs. Candidates must be able to see and hear people in the pool.Expected hours of work—part time year-round or seasonal, less than 30 hours per week. Shifts vary based on facility, time of day, day of the week and month of the year. Typical shifts include mornings 9am-12pm., early evening shifts 3:45m-6pm, and weekend shifts 9am-12pm. Monday and Wednesday evening group lessons are offered in 3 week sessions year round at Gypsum Recreation Center, Saturday morning lessons are offered year round at Gypsum Recreation Center and at Eagle Pool and Ice Rink in the summer. Monday-Thursday morning lessons are offered in 3 week sessions at Eagle Pool and Ice Rink in the summer. Private and Semi-Private swim lessons are offered at all three pools as available.Travel—none, employees are typically scheduled at one facility per day. Employees who are scheduled at multiple facilities per day will be notified and given ample time to travel between facilities. Requirements: Eligibility qualifications—Must be at least 16 years old.Required education and experience—Must hold current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification or can obtain within one year of teaching swim lessons.Preferred education and experience—High School diploma or GED is preferred. Experience teaching age group, high school, collegiate and adult swimmers preferred. American Red Cross Lifeguard certification preferred. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Trainer certification preferred.
